In my family we never spoke about death, nor about our emotions. When I was 22, my parents told me one day during lunch that my father had been suffering from chronic leukemia for four years. I held back the tears, finished my lunch, and went to my room to quietly cry. They just kept repeating that everything was going to be fine- that one could live with chronic leukemia; as long as it was kept under control. For a time, everything truly was fine. Some time later, my childhood home began to unravel.
Dad was very attached to the ground because he had worked the land all his life. This disease slowly stole that from him. He lacked the strength to work in the fields, and with time even the will to leave the house. During this time, the disease worsened and passed on to the acute stage.
I carried out this project together with my mentor Agata Grzybowska, as part of the Debuts platform, which was founded as part of the Open Call organized by the PictureDoc foundation.
